# Computations in structural mechanics – a must

Ways and details

Computations in the area of structural mechanics involve both static and dynamic investigations. Static computation is used e.g. to determine component and assembly deformations and stresses under various loads. On this basis, subsequent computations are then carried out in relation to operational stability. The robustness and structural dimensions of the products are thus evaluated and optimized prior to design and development.

Simulation is an important part of efficient, cost-effective development of our products. Computations in the area of structural and fluid mechanics are carried out in this context. Solenoids are also designed virtually using magneto static design computations. The interactions of the individual components and the overall behavior of systems are analyzed by means of system simulations. With the aid of Robust Design Optimization (RDO), the performance of the product is ensured regarding the entire production variation.

Example of static FEM: Stator and rotor deformation under load from the screw joint after assemblys

Example of dynamic FEM: Determination

Topology optimization of a Vanecam locking disk

Another area of structural mechanical computation for Hilite is topological optimization, primarily of diecast components. This type of optimization identifies the best geometry of a component to meet various criteria (e.g. maximum rigidity with minimum weight). As a result, the available installation space can be used efficiently and cost-effectively.

A better understanding of hydraulics

With the aid of calculations in the area of fluid mechanics, it is possible to look inside a hydraulic system and determine volume flows and fluid forces. Accurate information about their effect on future behavior of the valves or camphaser systems can be obtained in this way.

Attraction or repulsion – that is the question

Calculations for solenoid design enable a virtual preliminary layout of all the electromagnetic parts to be created and optimized for the specific requirements. This involves both the preliminary configuration of the coils to be used and the design of the ferromagnetic circuit that will maximize the magnetic forces.

Cost-effective and robust with RDO

Detailed analyses can be carried out with Robust Design Optimization (RDO) that illustrates complex interactions and enables to adapt the products by means of specific optimization to the application in question.
