Hilite at the 39th International Vienna Motor Symposium
For decades, the International Vienna Motor Symposium has been a meeting place for more than a thousand engine experts, top executives from the automotive and supply industries, and representatives from specialist bodies and federal ministries.
The event on 26 and 27 April 2018 offered a wide range of groundbreaking lectures, with ample time for discussion and networking.
This year once again saw Hilite exhibit at the accompanying trade show, presenting its new corporate video to enormous interest.
Alongside hydraulic control valves for engine and transmission applications, together with camphaser systems, Hilite also unveiled new VCR technology that makes it possible to vary the compression ratio while an engine is running. A two-stage switchable VCR system allows the fuel consumption of a modern downsizing petrol engine to be reduced by around 5-7 %, depending on driving style.
Hilite's mission is to help create a clean environment through innovative products and technical solutions which reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
Partnership with FEV on series production of two-stage VCR connecting rod
Aachen, February 2018 – The FEV Group and automotive parts supplier, Hilite International, are partnering to develop and manufacture a two-stage, variable compression ratio (VCR) connecting rod. The goal of this partnership is to leverage synergies in the development of the product and devise a cost-efficient solution for serial production.
This collaboration is mutually beneficial for both parties. FEV will provide the development and systems expertise, while Hilite, a systems supplier with vast experience in production, has the know-how to produce large quantities of components.
According to Professor Stefan Pischinger, President and CEO of the FEV Group, “we have found Hilite to be a strong partner for the final phase of development for the VCR connecting rod, as they have established themselves as a systems supplier within the market.” On the subject of the cooperation, he adds, “VCR connecting rods are an important technology for the future of the internal combustion engine to considerably reduce CO2 and exhaust emissions in real operation. FEV’s solution has the advantage that it can be incorporated into nearly any engine without an entire redesign.”
David Wei, CEO of Hilite, based in Marktheidenfeld, Germany, gives a positive assessment of the partnership, which initially is scheduled for a period of two years.
“We supply our customers with advanced and efficient solutions,” said Wei. “By collaborating with FEV and combining our expertise, we will now be able to offer our customers this value proposition in the area of VCR.”
The VCR technology meets the challenges of downsizing and the associated increase in combustion pressure by enabling optimal adjustment of the compression ratio at any time. This innovative approach is a reasonable complement to the wide variety of future powertrain solutions for affordable, personal mobility. The optimized internal combustion engine will continue to play a major role alongside purely electric drives – in particular, for long-distance travel – and in hybrid vehicles. That claim is even more valid when considering that the properties of future, renewable fuels (referred to as “e-fuels”), encounter favorable conditions within a VCR engine.
The two-stage VCR connecting rod developed by FEV is already being used in multiple demonstration vehicles. The company also has prototypes for heavy-duty and large engines, which have already proven their performance in a comprehensive series of tests.
The FEV Group, with headquarters in Aachen, Germany, is an internationally renowned service provider in vehicle development. The skill spectrum of FEV includes consulting and the development and testing of innovative vehicle concepts, all the way up to serial production. In addition to engine and transmission development, vehicle integration, and the calibration and homologation of modern vehicle powertrains, the development of hybrid and electric drive systems as well as alternative fuels is constantly increasing in importance. Another area of activity includes optimizing electronic control systems as well as the increasing connectedness of cars. In this context, one particular focus is the continued development of autonomous vehicles.

Trainers Forum visiting Hilite Germany
Hilite Germany is one of over 2,600 training companies in trade and industry in Main-Franconia. So that trainers, training officers and vocational schools can exchange amongst themselves, the Würzburg-Schweinfurt Chamber of Commerce set up the trainers' forum.
As part of this, instructors have the opportunity to visit other training companies.
On April 22, 2015, Hilite Germany opened its doors in Marktheidenfeld for 25 instructors from Main-Spessart who were very interested in the company, the training opportunities and its products.
After the presentation of the company by Managing Director Jörg Feuring and the introduction to training with Hilite by the Trainer Nadine Pregitzer, visitors were able to learn all about the products and processes with a tour of the factory.
There was an opportunity to exchange and discuss in a relaxed atmosphere during the subsequent get together. The Head of the Education Forum Thomas Schäbler for the Main-Spessart area aptly summarized the event in the send-off: Hilite—a real highlight.
€2,000 for Sternenzelt
2015-04-15 Hilite Germany once again donates to the children's hospice
On Wednesday, April 15, 2015, the Vice President Human Resources Jörg Westphal and the Works Council Chairman Karl Rüppel handed over a check for € 2,000 to Annette Rosskamp from the children's hospice. Management generously rounded up the original raffle proceeds of €618.
The Sternenzelt Main-Franconia Children's Hospice Association e.V. has tasked itself with supporting families of children, adolescents or young adults with terminal illnesses or severe disabilities and is entirely dependent on donations, because there is no cost-covering funding for children's hospices in Germany.
Currently the children's hospice is caring for eight families. Since 2009, 22 family companions have been trained at the outpatient children's hospice in Munich (AKM). In July 2015 another four family companions (children's hospice helpers) will be trained. The Sternenzelt association has 156 members.
The Sternenzelt children's hospice family companions don't consider themselves death companions, but rather life companions, accompanying families for many years in the home environment.
Still, it’s a big wish of the Sternenzelt children's hospice to build a stationary children's hospice in the Main-Franconia area so that families caring for their critically ill children at home can have a break in a stationary children's hospice as a whole family, in order to be capable and ready to cope with the routine of everyday life after the downtime.
Hilite Germany has consistently supported the Hospice Association in recent years with donations.

Intelligent control with integrated magnet control unit
Hilite has worked together with Melecs from Vienna to develop the Flowtronic™ valve, which was presented last December at the CTI in Berlin.
The name Flowtronic™ covers a entire family of valves for which the control electronics are integrated into a magnet. This means that the functionality of the valve control unit is represented by a chip in the magnet. The valve can thereby be directly connected to the CAN bus in the vehicle. Because there is an entire family of valves, the different valve functions can be represented by adapting the corresponding hydraulic components on the magnet.
Flowtronic™ can be used anywhere that precise valve functions requires, and the valves are therefore controlled with an external control unit. The Flowtronic valves can be used without these external control units.
The control signal for a valve consists of a current signal with an overlapping dither frequency and adjusted amplitudes. The control signal is calculated and output on the basis of different framework conditions like pressure or flow rate requirements, temperature, oil temperature, torque, or acceleration. As a result, the quality of the control signal is only as good as the electronics and software in the control unit.
In the past, Hilite had no influence on the quality of the external control unit and the software stored on it, however the quality of the valves in the system were very closely specified. With the integrated control electronics in the Flowtronic™ magnet valve, it is now possible to have direct influence on the quality of the electronic elements and software in use. The integrated control can be specially adapted and coordinated for each valve. By contrast, an external control unit is a universal electronic device “off the shelf” that has to deal with as many valves and components as possible from different manufacturers, making it a compromise solution.
With Flowtronic™, Hilite is able to offer the ideally coordinated valve with control electronics to every customer inquiring about sample valves, whether they already have experience with proportional valves or not. The assessment of the valve quality no longer depends on an unknown and unadjusted controller, and the customer gets to know the quality of the Hilite valve right from the start.

The children's eyes were alight at the St. Nicholas School in Marktheidenfeld
For the third year in a row, the Altfeld automotive supplier Hilite Germany GmbH presented generously filled bags of gifts to the children of the St. Nicholas Special Needs Center.
Anja Bender and Martina Dosch from the personnel department as well as works council Chairman Karl Rüppel , District Administrator and Chairman for Assistance in Everyday Life Armin Grein, and School Principal Martin Gramlich paid a visit to all the classes, from the inclusive preschool all the way through to the trade school level.
Karl Rüppel told the children a tale of how St. Nicholas' little helpers had been in Altfeld the previous evening in order to drop off bags of gifts at Hilite for the children. Since it had been so very stormy on this particular evening, one of the helpers had lost a wing. Mr. Rüppel brought this wing along to the school on the morning of St. Nicholas' Day in order to show it to the children. The children and youths were quite astounded and were excited about the visit and gifts. A few of the classes showed their appreciation with a little Christmas carol.
Martin Gramlich and Armin Grein have welcomed the fact that these yearly St. Nicholas visits have become a tradition. For Hilite Germany, it goes without saying that the company will get involved in its community. The Hilite delegation looks forward to seeing the children's eyes light up every year.
In the meantime, St. Nicholas' little helper has already been by to retrieve his angel wing.

Hilite visits the VDI conference “Transmissions in Vehicles”
On June 18 and 19, 2013, the 13th international VDI conference “Transmissions in Vehicles” took place in Friedrichshafen. The event was accompanied by a trade exhibition of well-known companies from the transmission sector.
According to the VDI, a new attendance record was set with over 1,100 visitors. This once again confirmed the event’s reputation as one of the most important of its segment and it also managed to impress with a comprehensive technical program.
The central theme of the event was the optimization of conventional transmissions and hybrid drives, with the aim of achieving the emissions limits specified for 2020. In the area of transmissions, there were lectures focusing on gear spreading and the number of gears. Several contributors explained how different OEMs have solved the challenges of the transmission market and have thus contributed to reducing CO2 emissions.
Hilite was represented by a small team who visited the Conference. This meant that they were able to compare notes with representatives from different OEMs: i.e. discover what trends can be expected, which technologies will be used, where opportunities for Hilite can be found and how Hilite can support its customers in the future.
Since the event is rated highly by trade exhibitors, exhibition space is in great demand and sells out quickly. It is therefore great news that next year Hilite will be represented for the first time with an exhibition booth. This marks another step by the company to strengthen its position in the DCT sector and gain a foothold in the AT business.
Hilite International won 2013 Chrysler Supplier of the year award

Mr. Martin Winterkorn (CEO of Volkswagen AG) presented a view of future aggregate technologies with the spotlight on the development of a high-performance diesel motor with a specific power output of 100 kW and a new 10-gear dual-clutch transmission designed to reduce consumption even further. Furthermore, VW sees major potential in alternative power units, particularly plug-in hybrids. These developments should help reduce the carbon emissions of the new car fleet in Europe to 95 g CO2/km by 2020.
At its exhibition stand, Hilite was able to present its products and services to the highly-interested specialist public. Visitors had the opportunity to test the multi-channel valve on a demonstrator or have the new mid-lock system explained in more detail.
The many discussions with the symposiums participants confirmed that Hilite is making a significant contribution to achieving emission and consumption reduction targets and to successfully mastering the associated challenges. They distinctly indicated that Hilite is right on track and has positioned itself securely in the global market of the automobile industry. The event also showed clearly that the combustion engine will continue to be the central drive technology.
Hilite supplies to VW for the XL1
Hilite Germany supplies the compact camphaser for the Plug-In Hybrid car XL1 to VW. The vehicle was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The fuel consumption of the vehicle, according to VW, lies below 0.9 litres/100 km. Among other measures undertaken to achieve this target was a reduction of the weight – the XL1 weighs just 795 kg. This is where the Hilite camphaser comes into effect. The exhaust valve camphaser and the exhaust valve for the Golf weigh approximately 1,459 g, whilst the compact camphaser and the valve together make up only 811 g.
Besides the weight, the size of the camphaser is decisive. Due to its compact design, it was possible to incorporate a high-pressure pump next to the camphaser. This common-rail pump feeds the fuel at high pressure into the combustion chamber. Consequently, both consumption and emissions were reduced whilst the power of the engine was increased. For Hilite, this means the first application of a camphaser in a diesel engine. Hilite is proud to be involved in the development of the XL1.
